Data Cabling
Data cabling is not sexy. But your business probably wouldn't survive without it.
What is data cabling?
Data cabling refers to the cabling which runs the IT for your business or home. If it's super organised your business will run smoothly. If it's not - well, we all know about IT issues. They cause headaches and profit loss.
Your internet, phones, security devices, PCs, printers, servers and more are connected and interconnected using data cable.
Data cabling is also used to connect home automation - smart lighting, thermostats, motorised blinds, motorised windows, sensors and air conditioners.
Data cabling is also referred to as voice cabling, ethernet cabling and structured cabling - but they are all the same thing.
Why is it necessary to plan the data connection cables?
It is important to get the data cabling and network infrastructure right from the get go. Routers, switches and everything else can be changed quite easily. Running new cables can be expensive, time consuming, and a headache.
Can electricians do data cabling?
Yes. In Victoria data cabling is included as part of an electrician's apprenticeship.
Are there any data cabling companies near me?
If you live in Melbourne or Geelong - Yes! All our electricians at DJD Electrics are qualified and experienced with data cabling work.
What parts are needed for data cabling?
Patch Panels :
- An array of ports on one panel
- Recommended even for small networks
- Required for a wired network
- Should be centrally located
- Centralised cables enable easy changes to complex networks
Cabling:
All network devices are connected back to the patch panels within the comms cabinet by cable.
Cat6 cable, although not the most recent standard, is still the best option.
Network Points:
- Cables are terminated to network points, which are fitted to a wall near to where you need the network.
- It is important to terminate the cables to a network point and not having loose cables lying around
- The network points will run back to your patch panel
